I Fear Change
I can rely on few things in life: crushed and torn magazines in the mail slot, my ability to exceed my cell phone minutes each month, my boss stopping by my desk just as I log onto Facebook…over the past few years, I’ve also come to rely on the same credit card due date every month. Until now.
I received a cryptic letter earlier this year stating that my due date would “change sometime in May”. Without any details, I had to constantly check my credit card account online to figure out the new due date. My credit card company decided to bump my due date up to before my payday. Awesome, thanks credit card company! You’re the best (read: I hate you).
I called them up and they could only fix my future due dates; they said their hands were tied this month. They couldn’t adjust this month’s due date because I didn’t give them enough notice. But I called on the day I received my e-statement, so that’s all the notice I could give them. So I’m basically screwed for June. I have to make my payment 3 days late and hope that they don’t fine me. Why did they change the due date in the first place?
I’ve been reading about credit card law changes for 2009, but I still don’t understand all the details. Anyone else come across this sort of problem? Do credit card companies just like to hassle customers?
UPDATE: while the new credit card laws still don’t make much sense to me, I was able to post my payment a few days late and not get penalized. Apparently they don’t look for late payments until 5 days after the due date, and since I was only 3 days late with my payment, I flew right under the radar. Not that I’m going to make a habit out of this.
